My mother and Dad got married in 1960. Their marriage has lasted over half a century.

My dad grew up in Atlanta, GA., and worked hard since he was fourteen. He started with a paper route and then graduated to a service station pumping gas.

He met this long-legged brown hair beauty resembling Jackie Onassis and immediately fell in love. My mom loved his handsome looks and curly hair, and he had piercing blue eyes and chubby cheeks. They met on a blind date through my mom’s friend. You could only double-date back then.

My mom had to take care of her three siblings because her mom was working and was divorced from an abusive husband. She was a good Christian woman and did her best to get by. She worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield all her life. They were destitute, but my granny eventually became secretary to the company’s vice president. But women still did not make money back then, so things were tight.

Dad had one sister and a single working mom. Dad worked, so they did better than most. He was popular in the neighborhood because he had one of the first TVs. He also had a car, which was rare for their age group. Back then, girls were not supposed to accept gifts from guys, but my dad wanted my mom to look pretty, so he bought her clothes. My granny let her…
