I rushed into his room in answer to his cries. There, a shadow hovers around me. My own sudden fear rises like the pit of hell threatening to swallow us. Beyond the shadow is an evil the child can see. The temperature of the room to me is normal. But, he feels like an arctic blast engulfed him in the dark. He shivers with the cold and fear radiates from him.
I long to tell him monsters don’t exist. But words won’t come. Instead, I try to comfort him. His skin feels frigid to the touch as I hug him. His whole body trembles with the cold.
His eyes grow wide as he looks behind me. I turn to see a void opening around the closet door. Wisps of smoke and a pungent sulfur smell emanate from the void. I grab him and make a break for the only exit — the bedroom door.
A flash of shadow swoops to engulf the doorway. My heart thumps heavily in my chest. Trapped, I look towards the window.
Should I jump? Sweat drips from my forehead. Would we survive the fall?
Taking a deep breath and closing my eyes, I smash through the glass, landing in a wake of shards. The wind, knocked from my body, causes me to lose hold of him…
