Here we go. Ideas are swirling in your head, your fingers hover over the keyboard and your momentum is palpable. Tap, tap, boom, your first draft is complete.

Firstly, congratulate yourself on your accomplishment. You’ve engaged in the activity of creation. You’ve followed your muse.

Now to the mechanics. Yes, mechanics.

Writing is the whole package. As well as telling a good story, we need to be technically savvy.

The benefits of taking a little time with mechanics are not shabby. You’re ensuring the quality of your own writing and the quality of your reader’s experience.

By mechanics, I’m referring to the process of self-editing. Self-pruning, self-refinement, and self-improvement — all through your writing.
