IIT Guwahati to Guwahati City

IIT Guwahati is situated on the other side of mighty Brahmaputra river and on another side we have the beautiful Guwahati city. Studying and staying here also includes frequent visits to the main city for many reasons. Crossing the river is necessary and the main task to visit the city. We have ferry and a long and tall bridge over the river to reach on the other side.

Starting from IIT Guwahati there are few existing ways to go to the city. IIT Guwahati bus service from campus to city, taking auto rickshaw through Amingaon, ferry, train from Agthori, taking an Uber or any cab are the available transport mediums. Of all of them I personally think ferry is the best way to reach the Guwahati city because it’s the shortest route existing, takes the least time and fare than any other medium and also provides the best comfort. On weekends the IIT Bus Service faces too much crowd and we don’t get seats most of the time. I personally prefer ferry on weekends and bus service on weekdays. Noticeable thing is that ferry takes around 25–30 mins on idea conditions while any other medium takes at least an hour or more.

How can we make ferry more effective?

The Problem -

In an ideal case the time taken through this transport system is 25 minutes but it isn’t always the case.The wait for the Auto rickshaw from Khokha market gets longer at times and unavailability of enough passengers let the auto drivers take more fare than normal. sometimes based on the luck the waiting time for a Boat can get longer too.

The Proposal -

The Ferry Boats sail at fixed times (every hour or half an hour), so if a student manages to reach the Ferry Ghat at just right time or maybe 5 mins before the wait for a Boat gets solved. Now problems for reaching the Ferry Ghat from Khokha Market can be solved if we have a dedicated transport system (Electric Rickshaw/Bus/Auto) for it which runs based on ferry boat times. Also making Ferry Boat timings alongwith the timings of dedicated transport service from Khokha available on Hello IITG App will make it easier for students.
