Upgraded Transport Service

From IITG to Guwahati City

--

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati, IITG) is a public institution established by the Government Of India, located in Guwahati, in the state of Assam in India. It is the sixth Indian Institute Of Technology established in India. The campus of IIT Guwahati is on the northern banks of Brahmaputra and abuts the North Guwahati town of Amingaon. It is often considered as the most beautiful campus in India.

IITG Campus

The campus is on a 700 acres (2.8 km2) plot of land around 20 km from the heart of the city. It has the Brahmaputra on one side and hills and vast open spaces on others. So there are basically 3 ways to travel from campus to city.

BUS : IITG offers a free bus service for faculty, non-academic staff and students to travel into the city of Guwahati, to an area called Panbazar. The bus service runs to and fro from morning 7:00 am from IITG to Panbazar, while the last bus returns from Panbazar at 8:15 pm. The buses are crowded on Saturdays as it is the official non-working day for the Institute and are comparatively less crowded on Sundays when the city is closed.

FERRY : There are always tempos available outside the institute. To reach the ghat, you can hop on a tempo which costs 20rs/head. At the ghat you’ll have to wait for sometime (around 15–30minutes) because the ferries take turns dropping and collecting passengers. It’ll cost you 10rs and 15 minutes to get to the Fancy bazaar ghat. And from there take a bus to the station in 5rs. So,you reach your destination for less than 50rs!

PRIVATE CAB : You can always book a cab through OLA/UBER services if you are in a hurry or need your privacy to travel, or have a heavy luggage with you. You can also split/share a cab with your friends or someone who is travelling to the same destination as yours.

For eg. — Gps Tracking For Bus

Even though there are ways to travel to city there is no particular terminal for Bus, Ferry, and Cabs. Well the transportation system can also be improvised by connecting the vehicles with a GPS service where people can take track of the timings and location of the vehicles. There can also be a smart card for IITG residents for travelling benefits. Well this solution can help the existing transportation to upgrade to a smart transport service.
