// Walter, The Blaxican //
When a certain someone announced their idea to build a wall along the US-Mexican border, we made it a point to find stories of people we’d be losing as a country if it happened. It’s been a rewarding exercise.
Walter’s Instagram page about the Blaxican experience shows how cultural interactions are not only constant, but can be overwhelmingly positive. That’s what we want people to think of when they hear the word ‘immigrant’. Instead of seeing the other, we can begin to see how their histories are also ours.

Walter Thompson always felt like an enigma. Growing up with a Mexican mom and an African-American dad in South LA, he sometimes just didn’t know which culture he belonged to.
He pursued this lingering question mark in college and, most recently, through the creation of a popular Instagram account called @BlaxicansOfLA.
“I have always said that identifying as a Blaxican is a political and revolutionary act.”
For him, the term ‘Blaxican’ is a way to bridge the gap between two communities that exist together, yet generally consider themselves very different. By being receptive to African-American and Mexican histories — how they are intertwined and continue to shape each other — he thinks the future will be more inclusive. Inclusivity is a goal we can all get behind.
