The first edition of HackArt — NMW hackathon was held in the National Museum in Warsaw on the 26th and 27th of May 2018. Almost 40 participants in eight teams were working for over 20 hours across two days on developing solutions based on Artificial Intelligence, aimed to make the museum’s resources accessible to the audience. The teams were mentored by 20 experts from a number of different fields, such as technology, culture, art and business.

We were looking for ideas inspired by Artificial Intelligence and generative art that would integrate new technologies into the museum, help promote it and introduce elements of automation that can serve to popularize its activities and collections.

Currently, we are witnessing a rapid growth of AI-related technologies. The use of bots and virtual assistants designed to make our lives easier and more pleasurable has become increasingly more common in applications and social media. Companies all over the world have been deliberating how to exploit the potential of artificial intelligence to gain the advantage over competitors, while cultural institutions have been striving to apply new technologies to attract new audiences.

For the next few months, we will be working closely with participants and partner institutions on how to effectively implement the developed ideas into the museum.

We would like to share our experiences of working on the project and implementing the ideas, as well as demonstrate how to use new technologies in cultural institutions.
