Humanity still faces major challenges. Conflicts continue to make humans bleed. Misery persists not only in poor countries but also in many rich countries. Several religions and minorities are still oppressed. And for many around the globe, daily life is a struggle. The question remains: how can we build a humanity driven by happiness & love instead of suffering & hate?

The root cause of conflicts, suffering & hate often lies in our unmet needs. It’s challenging to be happy and positive when you don’t have food to feed yourself and your family or a roof to keep yourself in a safe & warm place. This perspective brings to mind Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which you can find below.

The evolution of our needs with our personal development according to Maslow. As we grow in our lives, some needs fade away while new needs appear
Where do you stand in this graph? The Evolution of Our Needs

When we see this graph, we can infer that to transition humanity towards a more enlightened state, we essentially need to facilitate the movement of people from left to right, i.e. along Maslow’s hierarchy. Let’s figure out some of the actions we could take to do so for each level.

  • Physiological Needs — The most important we can take to help people at this level reach the “next level” is to provide them with water, food, & shelter. Many NGOs such as UNICEF are currently trying to meet this need for a worldwide population of 8Bn people.
  • Safety Needs For this level, we need to provide people with personal, financial, and employment safety. Other NGOs such as Doctors Without Borders and the World Health Organization are working on making health accessible to all.
  • Love/Belonging Needs — This involves fostering community, friendship, and intimacy. Numerous companies like MeetUp and Tinder work on this level of need.
  • Esteem needs — People at this level are looking for self-esteem, status, and recognition. How our society is built contributes to this factor. Accessing a top school (e.g., MIT, Harvard), working at a famous company (e.g., Google, Apple), or even building a professional network on LinkedIn helps people build self-esteem, status, and recognition.
  • Self-Actualization Needs — People at this level want to go even further, unlocking their full potential. From Tony Robbins, TED Talks, and Coursera, there are many companies helping people thrive.

So if you have an entrepreneurial drive or a willingness to make this world a better place, I invite you to choose one of these needs, the one you’re most passionate about, and find an innovative solution for it. And together, we can change the world and bring humanity to a happy, peaceful, and enlightened state.

And remember, you can make a change wherever you are in this Maslow graph. Simply find someone who’s on your left on the graph and help that person out. Bring her or him to your position in the graph. This chain of generosity & help will make a lasting & deep change in humanity for the generations to come.
