I’ve recently become interested in cryptic crosswords, although am definitely no expert at them. When you first read a clue, it can make zero sense. But hidden within the clue are code words that hint what it’s actually about and how you should go about solving it. Each clue is a mini puzzle, rather than with a conventional crossword where a description of the word that’s the answer. This makes solving each clue trickier than a standard crossword, but so much more satisfying when you solve it because your answer will fit the clue in multiple ways. I thought I’d give a few examples of the types of clues that can exist, so that you too can start playing with cryptic crosswords.

1. Definitions

Each clue has two components to it. The definition, which is the direct clue to the answer, and the rest of the clue which is a wordplay that needs cracking to help you get there.
The first step to deciphering a cryptic clue, is to identify the definition. The definition tends to be the first or last word (or group of words) in the clue.
