A Scalpel Piercing Darkness

Spreading the Light of Hope

--

For 5 minutes, keep your eyes shut and imagine the world around you. Imagine the relief when you finally open your eyes and see the light around you.
We realise how we take for granted the gifts of our senses. Right?

Most people are like us and enjoy the gifts of perfect senses, especially eyesight, but then life may throw its curveball and cause some injury or age may catch up, leading to a loss of curable blindness.

We, the better privileged, may find the means to get timely treatment, but millions face lifelong blindness just because they have no resources or access to any curable treatments.

There was a time in our country (India) when a large chunk of our population was grappling with a lack of hope to see the light again in their lives.

In such darkness came a soul with the lamp of hope, who filled the lives of these underprivileged with free or affordable brightness.

The man of Jyoti (the light of a lamp) was Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy, or Dr. V.

Even acute arthritis did not defeat this man in his mission, as he picked up the scalpel with his crooked fingers and carried on spreading light uninhibited into thousands of lives.

To learn about his amazing selfless journey, which his family now carries on, click on the @Thisday link and enjoy the unwavering glow of kindness through restored eyesight.

While the world proceeds with the visible social blindness of callous negligence, let us revive the eyesight of compassion for our fellow beings by sharing such stories that keep the lamp of hope alive in our words, through commendations and reactions to them.

Have an illuminating week ahead.
