Discovering Purpose in Physical Activity- Shifting Life’s Trajectory

I doubt I can ever get used to the “awe” that arises when we make decisions not knowing what the outcome will be.

As I reflect on the past three years, I’m astounded by the substantial transformation I’ve undergone — not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. A pivotal moment in this transformative journey was when I decided to join the gym three years ago, and later, to take up running at the start of this year.

I‘ve shed unhealthy habits, bid farewell to junk food, curtailed my alcohol consumption, and established healthier sleep routines. The cumulative effect of consistent physical activity has not only reshaped my body but, perhaps more profoundly, my mind and soul. However, what I want to emphasize goes beyond the physical realm. However, before that, let us consider the catastrophic role of physical inactivity.

There is a body of scientific literature that reports on the benefits of physical exercise on one’s health including the downsides of a sedentary lifestyle. Non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, diabetes and cancer are the major leading causes of death globally (approximately 41 million people per year). Changes in lifestyle behaviour such as physical exercise and diet can significantly reduce the burden of these diseases. Take a moment to think about that and reflect on the idea that the resolution to this global problem lies within the individual.

In these moments, the treadmill, the weights, or the open road become not just instruments of physical change but agents of personal transformation. They become the means to combat the daunting statistics of global disease and mortality. It’s a tangible reminder that the solution to these monumental issues isn’t just in the hands of policymakers and healthcare professionals; it’s in the hands of every individual who chooses to embark on this journey. The decision to exercise isn’t just about shedding calories; it’s about shedding limitations, both physical and mental. It’s an invitation to embrace a holistic approach to health and well-being, a commitment to a healthier, happier, and more empowered you.

We treat the body rigorously so it will not be disobedient to the mind- Seneca

Perhaps one of the most influential Stoic philosophers emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy mind and body. I believe as Seneca also did that physical exercise is intertwined with self-discipline, rationality and the pursuit of virtue. As a result, I’ve come to cultivate a resilient mind and body that help me to better face the challenges and hardships of life that lie ahead. This holistic approach in life is meaningful and fulfilling, and it directly or indirectly perturbs challenges such as depression and anxiety, ailments and lethargy that hinder us from that.

Importantly, engage in some physical exercise consistently for as long as you have the capability and ability to do so. Effective ways of engaging in physical exercise to improve your well-being include:

Aerobic Exercise:

Benefits: Enhances cardiovascular health, aids in weight management, elevates mood, and serves as a stress reliever.

Examples: Dive into the refreshing waters of swimming, pound the pavement through running, or embrace the wind on a cycling adventure.

Strength Training:

Benefits: Releases dopamine and endorphins, builds strength and size and fortifies bone health.

Examples: Whether you prefer lifting weights, bodyweight exercises, or resistance band workouts, each path leads to increased physical prowess and mental resilience.

Yoga:

Benefits: Fosters balance, flexibility, and strength, while offering a sanctuary for mind and body.

Notable Impact: Clinical trials have demonstrated its effectiveness in improving mental health, making it a holistic wellness choice. So I’m definitely going to try it out in the near future.

Dance:

Benefits: While not my personal favourite, dancing is a fun way to exercise, elevating mood and reducing stress.

Variety: From ballet to hip-hop, dance offers something for everyone, regardless of their skill level.

Outdoor Sports:

Benefits: These dynamic team sports, including football, netball, tennis, basketball, and volleyball, combine physical exertion with competition.

The list is exhaustive, however, what’s important is for you to find activities you enjoy and can sustain over time.

To engage in physical activity is to embrace the gift of life fully. It’s a recognition of the profound connection between our bodies, minds, and spirits. It’s a pledge to nurture the temple that houses our dreams, aspirations, and experiences.
