Today, I’m here to tackle the trend/challenge that every writer has attempted:

An Article a Day Challenge!

The name is self-explanatory, you must write an article a day no matter what! Usually for 30 or 100 days.

There are people, especially many of the top writers who do this regularly as it’s their work.

They don’t call it a challenge because it isn’t to them.

However, to the majority of writers who write in their spare time, cranking out an article a day is usually detrimental. The main reasons being that it’ll affect your enjoyment of writing and have a hit on the quality of your articles.

Burnout is real in every industry.

But it is a great motivator to write which is always a plus for me.

So, I got to thinking

What is something else people can do? Another challenge perhaps?

This is what I came up with. I don’t have a catchy name for it but for now, we can call it:

Master of Categories

How it Works

The idea is pretty simple, try to write at least one article for every category on Medium!

Since there already is a quantitive goal, you don’t have to add the time factor and can write whenever you feel inspired.

Maybe some days you want to write but can’t think of an idea, this is perfect for that. Just spend time looking at a category that interests you and write a short 2–3 minute article about it.

To break it down even further, there are a few major categories and lots of sub-categories. You can decide what you want to do based on how much you want to spend on it.

I’ll list out the categories at the end since it’s a pretty long list.

Why?

I hear you asking why should you try this. Well, I have a few reasons.

Discovery

This is pretty obvious, writing about other categories helps you discover more about the different topics and expand your depth of knowledge.

For someone like me where learning new things is always my goal, this is one of the main reasons I’m so attracted to this idea.

Who knows you might also love that topic and want to dedicate more time when the challenge is over.

Community

Medium in general has been a great community for me. I have met many people who are wonderful and dedicate so much of their time to helping out others, even someone like me.

This sense of community is something you can experience all over again when you learn about and join a new one.

Being a beginner again might seem like a bad thing, but it’s one of the greatest experiences since there is so much for you to discover.

Expanding Your Library

Let’s go over something that can help you succeed on Medium.

You might have a random article that for no reason entirely decided to be one of your most successful.

From personal experience, it was about a topic I never knew there was an audience for.

Giving things a shot and seeing where they land is what you need to be successful.

You can’t just stick to what is comfortable.

You might hit diamonds searching for coal, and expand your audience to an entirely new demographic.

So if you’re getting tired or running out of ideas, give this a shot. You don’t even have to be an expert, just give your unique perspective or take on a situation.

What to Take Away

Your journey as a writer is always about challenging yourself.

If you find writing every day a worthy challenge you enjoy, that’s great to hear. If you feel burnout from it and it makes writing feel like a chore, there are many other things you can try to spice things up and get past that creative wall.

By all means, find what works best for you; this is just one idea you can try.
