Why FPV drones are getting more popular
FPV drones have increased a lot in popularity in recent years. What used to be a niche, exclusive to those with a lot of experience with model aircraft, is now getting more and more available to everyone.
In this primer we’ll cover the basics of FPV drones and why we think they’ll be the next craze.
What are FPV drones?
First and foremost: ‘What even is an FPV drone?’.
The first thing to know is that FPV stands for ‘First Person View’. As opposed to the traditional method of flying a drone, wherein the pilot controls the drone from their perspective on the ground, an FPV drone is piloted from the drone’s pount of view. As if you’re sitting in the drone. This is done using so-called FPV goggles. They allow you to see directly what the drone sees and offer you more control and a much more immersive experience.
What are they used for?
These drones can be used for the same applications as a regular drone, such as remote inspections, aerial photography and cinematography, but with it’s own unique twists.
There are also things only an FPV drone can do. Whereas a regular drone is limited to simple movements and always keeps itself steady, an FPV drone allows you to make any motion you want with it. This leads to two more applications of FPV drones:
Droneracing// This is probably the most popular use of FPV drones. Because you’ve got so much control over your drone you can race to test your skills. This has become a very popular hobby among enthusiasts because it’s a very exciting way to test and improve your drone skills.
Freestyle// Another popular use of FPV drones if freestyling. People will make use of the control they have over their drone to do all kinds of tricks, like loopings and barrel rolls.
Why is it the next craze?
The main reason why it’s becoming more and more popular among the general public is that FPV is getting easier to get into. Nowadays you can just order a full FPV kit online and start flying almost immediately without having to assemble it yourself or knowing how everything works.
The price to enter is also going down, you can get a decent setup for only $300–$400.And big companies are starting to get attention for the upcoming trend. DJI, the most popular drone company as of right now, launched its first FPV drone earlier this year. These big companies push for improvement and innovation in FPV: DJI only supports digital FPV instead of analogue, which offers a much clearer view from your drone’s camera.
It’s an exciting and futuristic way to get a new view of the world and experience a new kind of freedom.
