Hi There! I am a Nuclear Physicist š
Click to know moreā¦
I am writing this story to introduce myself to you all. Feel free to comment if you want to know something more. I will update this post from time to time.
Hiā¦My name is Virender Ranga.
At Present
I am an experimental nuclear physicist in training.š
I am a PhD student at the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) in Roorkee, India, since 2017. However, I work mainly at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research(TIFR) in Mumbai, India.š
I regularly hop between Roorkee and Mumbai for work. And sometimes visit other places while hopping. š
My Education
I earned my Master of Science from IIT Roorkee, specialising in nuclear physics, in 2017.
Initially, I worked on simulations using CERN-GEANT4 and then moved on to hands-on experience with experiments. I could publish my master's work. You can read it here.
I completed my Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physics from Hansraj College, University of Delhi, India, in 2015.
Where am I from?
I am originally from Jind, Haryana, but my family is settled in the ancient city of Kurukshetra.
My Hobbies
I like clicking photographs to capture a specific viewpoint of a particular event. You can have a look at my clicks on my Instagram profile.
I have started writing on Medium quite recently, and I like it. Although I had the urge to write for a long time, and I have tried writing on Quora, I could not sustain it.
As a writing platform, Medium has proved to be the perfect fit for me. The simplicity of the user interface and the easy-to-start writing sensation that Medium provides is unparalleled.
My Research
For my PhD thesis, I am exploring the nuclear structure of low-lying states of light nuclei using proton beams.
I use radioactive sources daily and have good experience in handling scintillation detectors.
I have experience performing beamline experiments at TIFR, Mumbai and IUAC, New Delhi.
One of my interests is simulating the Ī³-ray response of scintillation detectors in CERN-GEANT4.
For data analysis and plotting, I prefer using CERN-ROOT, although I also like Gnuplot.
I Love Coding
I started coding in 2011 and couldnāt stop.š
JAVA was the first programming language I learned. I also coded a fair bit of SQL back then.
During my bachelorās, I learned to program an 8086 microprocessor. I also learned C and C++.
In my masterās, I learned FORTRAN.
I have used PYTHON occasionally and donāt claim I know PYTHON.
I also have a little experience with HTML, CSS, and JAVASCRIPT.
Currently, I only use C++ because I use GEANT4 and ROOT a lot.
My Publications
I had the opportunity to work in a variety of fields, and that reflects in my list of publications.
I have worked in the
- characterisation of detectors,
- determination of natural radioactivity,
- simulation of response due to Ī³-rays and neutrons,
- heavy ion nuclear reactions,
- scattering of protons from light nuclei,
- nuclear-scattering theories(Optical Model Potential), etc.
I have authored several publications. Here is the link to my Google Scholar profile.
My Website
I have a personal website also. Here is the link.
