How I Successfully Failed On Medium.
How to start your journey on Medium as a writer
The other day I was scrolling through Reddit while munching on chips, between my hunger spell I glanced at the content of my screen and I ended up reading about Medium.
My greasy fingers started tapping away on my phone screen to download the Medium application on my phone. Then I straightaway proceeded to write passionately and uploaded my first article, hoping to get at least a few views.
But…nothing happened
*crickets*
Nothing showed in my statistics. On day two, the condition was the same, and then it dawned upon me…that maybe I’m the villain, the real culprit. I am a terrible writer. Shocking.
*sigh*
So, I went on a quest to find the secret behind writing a good article, and I found out a few things which can help you kick-start your writing career.
Read, read and read. Read articles on Medium or anything in general. Reading articles of your interest can help in understanding how to compose a compelling article.
Focus on your headline. That’s what attracts the readers to click on your article. Research which kind of headlines attract readers.
Read blogs of accomplished bloggers and study how they put together their thoughts, study what keeps you hooked to their content and take inspiration.
Be consistent, keep writing, and be agile. Write as many articles as possible. Your writing will improve with time, indeed, and the times invested will pay off.
Write! Write as much as possible, be consistent and you'll get better at writing eventually.
Seize advantage of free courses on the internet via Coursera, LinkedIn, Udemy, etc. It can help you understand the basics and makes a huge difference in your writing quality.
Lastly, be authentic and deliver what your headline promised. Make sure your article is as good as your headline. Avoid click-bait. (Damn! I hate them.)
These tips have helped me in increasing the audience of my posts. I also revisited my old musings and it turns out my younger self was a better writer with her rose-tinted glasses on. As an exercise, I took my old musings and tried to improve them with my mature voice till I was satisfied with the outcome. Also, taking inspiration from writers doesn't hurt unless you lose your writing style. You can write on the topics on which the established writers write and compare to understand what makes their articles so readable.
I hope this helps you and don’t forget to put on your rose-tinted glasses!
