On social media, complex skincare routines filled with 8–10 skincare products have become a trend. All of these are overwhelming, especially to a beginner who doesn’t know jack about how to build a skincare routine.

It’s understandable for you as a beginner to be intimidated and confused as hell about how to build a basic skincare routine or how to find affordable must-have skincare products that will treat your skincare concerns and improve your overall skin health.

But no worries, in this blog post, I will be showing you(man or woman), how to build a simple and minimalistic skincare routine with all the basics you need as a beginner.

1. CLEANSE

Cultivating a daily habit of cleansing your skin twice a day would go a long way in removing dirt, sebum(oil), sweat, and any leftover product(makeup or sunscreen) applied during the day or the night before. Cleansing your skin gives other skincare products a clean canvas to work on and makes them penetrate your skin better.

As a beginner, it’s important to opt for a mild and gentle cleanser that will not strip off the natural oils on the surface of your skin, leaving your skin feeling tight and uncomfortable.

2. EXFOLIATE

Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells that are sitting on the surface of your skin. These dead skin cells are responsible for a dull complexion, clogged pores and they prevent beneficial skincare ingredients from being absorbed into the skin.

By removing these dead skin cells with a chemical exfoliant twice a week, you’re improving blood flow and uncovering fresh and new cells. This makes your skin appear healthier, smoother, softer, and brighter.

3. VITAMIN C SERUM

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes the damage done to the skin by free radicals. Free radicals are aggressors generated by our bodies when we are exposed to damaging factors like environmental pollution and UV rays.

Every day, you’re exposed to these free radicals that can negatively impact your skin’s health by disrupting its ability to repair itself. A Vitamin C Serum would protect against sun damage, brighten your complexion, fade hyperpigmentation, and slow down the aging process by boosting collagen production in the skin.

4. MOISTURIZE

Applying a moisturizer is a necessity in your daily skincare routine especially if you have oily skin. It’s a common myth that moisturizers will leave your skin looking and feeling like a greaseball if you have oily skin or acne-prone skin

However, a good moisturizer is supposed to provide the necessary hydration your skin needs and, in turn, will regulate excessive oil production. There are different moisturizers with different purposes, specifically formulated for every possible skin type and skin concern out there.

I recommend you find a moisturizer that has the right balance between humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, propanediol, emollients (petrolatum, lanolin), and occlusive (waxes, silicones, fatty alcohol).

5. SUNSCREEN

Sunscreens are applied to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. They help to protect against sunburn, prevent premature aging, clear hyperpigmentation, and decrease the risk of skin cancer, etc.

Sunscreen is regarded as one of the best anti-aging skincare products that work either by absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays and preventing it from reaching the deeper layers of the skin or by reflecting the rays off the skin.

If you want to keep your skin looking radiant and healthy for years to come, you need to apply sunscreen daily and reapply every two hours.

Bottom Line

As a beginner, when starting a skincare routine, make sure to do a patch test(on your arm or leg) or introduce a product at a time in your skincare routine to prevent irritation.

You can slowly add on products as you go along if you are dealing with skincare issues such as redness, acne, or eczema.
