During the first years of your career as an academic researcher, you learn a thing or two. Starting a PhD not only can change your life completely — and I mean literally, from moving to a new place to having to deal with anxiety on a daily basis — but also teaches you new skills, such as publishing in academic journals. Here’s how academic publishing works.

1. You write a paper

This might sound self-evident, but it’s where it all starts. To publish academic work you have to write an academic paper. Academic papers are usually written in a specific style and should be as clear as possible in communicating the results of the research at hand. Easy, right?

Not quite. In theory, the workflow you follow to successfully put down your results in black and white is pretty straightforward. In practice, however, there are some things that you only learn with experience, such as getting used to the jargon and the typical structure of a paper in your field. You should also learn who exactly are you writing for.

Anyway, once you get past all these obstacles, congratulations!

The paper is written. You might think this is it, all the work is done — but no, there’s still more to come so keep reading!
