How Writing At Medium Refined My Craft
Writing is more than what we write to justify ourselves.
Writing on Medium can be a great way to refine one’s craft by exposing oneself to a diverse range of writing styles and perspectives.
By reading other people’s articles and observing what works and what doesn’t, one can learn new writing techniques and strategies.
Additionally, Medium’s platform allows for easy feedback and engagement with readers, which can provide valuable insights into what resonates with an audience and what needs improvement.
I have my own story to share.
Let’s not drag it out, I’m going to jump on to the topic.
Top 5 Lessons I learned
- Power of Diversity
- Fear of lacking out
- Matching the frequency of readers
- Simplicity and grammar
- Technology
I feel proud that I have published over 100+ stories on medium and read over 200 articles in the last couple of months.
I’m changed in many ways now.
Power of Diversity
Diverse areas of knowledge can make you a better writer in several ways.
First, having a broad range of knowledge and experiences can help you to come up with unique and interesting ideas for your writing.
Having a diverse understanding of different fields, cultures, and perspectives can help you to write with more depth and nuance, and to appeal to a wider range of readers.
Furthermore, having a diverse area of knowledge can also help you to write more persuasively and effectively by being able to use examples, references, and statistics from different fields, making your writing more credible and convincing.
Fear of lacking out
The fear of lacking out as a writer because of losing the trust of readers is a common concern to me just like other writers.
The trust of readers is crucial for the success of any writer, as it determines how well their work will be received and how widely it will be read.
Losing the trust of readers can be detrimental to a writer’s career, as it can lead to a decline in readership and a loss of opportunities for publication or collaboration.
This fear can lead to self-censorship or avoiding certain topics, which can limit a writer’s creativity and potential.
To overcome this fear, it’s important for a writer to have a strong understanding of their audience and what they are looking for in terms of content.
It’s also important to be open to feedback and to use it to improve your work, rather than let it discourage you.
Matching the frequency of readers
Matching the frequency of readers refers to the practice of adjusting the language, tone, and style of writing to align with the reading level and interests of the intended audience.
This can include adjusting the vocabulary, sentence structure, and overall complexity of the text to match the reading ability and background knowledge of the readers.
This is important in order to ensure that the message is effectively communicated and easily understood by the intended audience.
Simplicity and grammar
Simplicity and grammar are both important elements of writing. Simplicity refers to the use of clear, straightforward language that is easy to understand.
This can include using short sentences, avoiding complex vocabulary, and breaking up long paragraphs. Good grammar, on the other hand, is the correct use of sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling in a piece of writing.
Together, simplicity and good grammar make the text easy to read and understand. They also make it more likely that the intended message will be communicated effectively.
Though, I have many posts which went viral and got over 10K views even if they had many grammatical mistakes.
Your readers like to read the clean message, unlike the bots who can’t interpret grammar mistakes.
That’s the reason, I believe we are far better than any AI tools to write stories that are meant to be read by other Humans.
Technology
Yes, technology has greatly impacted the way we write and has made it more efficient, accessible, and convenient.
Lately, ChatGPT is in trend and many writers are writing 5 to 10 stories on daily basis using AI tools.
Jasper, Copy.ai, and many similar AI writing assistants are becoming increasingly popular that is for a reason.
It’s like the story of Nokia rejecting the Android OS which finally outranked NOKIA in the mobile industry.
We need to accept the change.
Summary:
Many authors talk about how writing on Medium helped them to improve their grammar, sentence structure, and overall writing style.
They mention how Medium’s audience and community helped them to get feedback and improve their writing.
But, I had a different perspective that I have shared in the best possible way, I could have.
