Medium Helped Me Buy a House: Here’s How
Homeownership seemed unattainable. And yet, it happened.
I bought a house. This isn’t me bragging; it’s me sharing my story with fellow writers because Medium, surprisingly, played a small yet significant role in making this happen.
Owning a home in Canada felt almost impossible at times. With skyrocketing housing prices and stagnant wages, I often thought homeownership was out of reach. But against all odds, it happened — and I owe part of this milestone to Medium. Here’s why.
Canada’s Housing Crisis: The Reality of Affording a Home
I live in Canada, where housing prices are notoriously high, driven by an artificial housing shortage exacerbated by government policies. In Toronto, the average home costs over $1,000,000 CAD, while Vancouver’s average is even higher. I found the exact numbers: $1,061,000 in Toronto and $1,276,000 in Vancouver. And they’re saying the prices decreased by a percentage or two since last year — great, thanks a lot!
The problem isn’t just limited to the big cities; smaller towns and cities aren’t very affordable either. Combine this with a 30% decline in the Canadian dollar against the US dollar since 2012 and stagnant salaries, and you have a recipe for financial struggle…
