It was 2011. I was eagerly waiting in the lobby for the boarding call with my parents.

My first flight. I was equally scared and excited. I was excited to experience something I’d only seen in movies.

Boarding has begun. It was 4:30 in the morning, I was sleepy, but at the same time, I was dancing with joy. The hostess greeted me with a smile. A pleasant start. Our seats were in the side row, so I took the window seat, although there was nothing particular to see other than the billowing clouds after takeoff, and I didn’t think of that at the time. For a 13-year-old, a window seat is a must on any trip!

The flight took off. My heart skipped a little when the flight stooped towards the sky, but I really enjoyed the night view of the airport. After a while, I was already dozing off, but I tried to stay awake so as not to miss anything on my first plane ride.

Things started to get out of hand when I started feeling nauseous. I had a heavy feeling in my chest. I tried to hold it for a while, but I couldn’t take it anymore.

Luckily, my mom was right next to me, and she helped me clean up. I was relieved when I finally let it out, but I no longer had the strength to stay awake. So I tried to sleep. They brought the food when I was half asleep. I could hear their voices, but I didn’t want to get up because I was starting to feel the exact same heaviness in my chest again!

On the four-and-a-half-hour flight to Doha, I’ve already vomited three times. I didn’t know that this could happen on air travel. I’ve always seen in movies actors sitting on airplanes, calm and quiet, reading or watching TV. I figured the only bad thing that could happen on a flight is a crash.

The trip completely destroyed me. I couldn’t eat anything for fear of throwing up again, even though I was hungry. I was still nauseous despite having nothing in my stomach. My sweet dream turned into a nightmare. Even after 12 years, I can still feel that heaviness I felt in my chest on my first flight…
