Struggling with Getting Started on Medium? It’s Worthwhile to Keep Going!

Many questions have been on my mind since I signed up on Medium several weeks ago:

  • What if no one reads my articles?
  • What if no one wants to follow me?
  • Will I find enough topics to write about?
  • Can I manage to find enough time in my daily life to write my texts?

Despite some initial hesitation, I have now published 12 articles.

But I still find starting on Medium incredibly difficult and sharing my thoughts with strangers creates a feeling of vulnerability and pressure in me. To be honest, even at this moment, I think:

“Will anyone read what I’m writing here on my iPad?”

Of course, I’ve watched many videos and read articles that are supposed to help beginners find their way on Medium and, ideally, even make money with their articles.

Everywhere it’s said:

Write every day!

The headline is the most important!

Structure your articles!

Join publications!

Then the followers and the dollars will come by themselves :-)

I gladly accept these tips and try to implement as many as possible. But the path to more attention seems infinitely long and fraught with self-doubt.

As a father of three, is it really sensible to invest so much time in writing texts?

Especially when you believe you’ve written a good article, but the reaction on Medium is:

Despite all the beginner’s problems, I’m confident enough to say:

“Shit happens!”

I’m still 100% sure that signing up on Medium was one of the best decisions in recent years. Rarely has a new topic in my life triggered me and captivated me as much as writing on this platform.

My thoughts and habits have completely changed since I signed up, which sometimes makes me chuckle:

  • I stand in the shower and for a moment I’m not sure if I’ve already soaped myself or not — because I’m constantly thinking about structuring an article.
  • I sit on the toilet and instead of playing “Dream League Soccer” as I have for the last few years, I dictate new article ideas to my iPhone.
  • I can neither finish my current book (usually I read about one book per week) nor do I turn on Amazon Prime every evening as usual. Instead, I sit on the terrace or at the kitchen table with my iPad or MacBook and write down my thoughts.

Apart from my problem in the shower, I am very pleased with these changes; I notice that something positive is happening with my thoughts.

Fittingly, I’ve often thought of a sentence by Ali Abdaal lately:

“Remember to enjoy the journey!”

This perfectly sums up my current attitude. Despite all doubts, setbacks, and the tough beginning, I am enjoying everything that comes with my new experiences on Medium.

That’s why I’m optimistic about reaching many more readers soon and sharing my thoughts with them.
