Have you ever wondered what the life of a professional photographer is genuinely like? Is it all glamorous photoshoots and creative freedom? Or is there a side to the industry that photographers are hesitant to share with the world? I am a professional wedding photographer with more than 8 years of experience. With this article, I want to unveil the hidden truths behind professional photography that photographers often keep under wraps. While the industry can certainly be rewarding and fulfilling, it’s not all sunshine and roses. Behind every exceptional photograph lies a lot of hard work, dedication, and challenges that beginner photographers or anyone trying to start in photography must know. So here are 5 facts I want to share with you if you are planning to become a Photographer:

1. Photography is not just about the Camera

Listen up fellow photography enthusiasts! Let me dispel this common misconception: the camera is merely a tool that freezes moments in time. So maybe you are asking…

…what truly elevates a photograph from ordinary to extraordinary?

I will answer that for you. It’s the photographer’s artistry, their command over essential techniques like lighting, composition, and post-processing. Those shots you admire from other photographers result from years of practice from individuals dedicated to mastering the technique. Trust me; it doesn’t matter what camera or lens you have. What truly matters are the basics of photography. I encourage you to embrace the learning process in photography’s journey and watch your photos gradually improve. So, experiment fearlessly, and let your artistic vision shine through your lens!

2. It’s not easy to make a living as a photographer

Nowadays, with the availability of affordable camera options, it seems like everyone is jumping on the “photographer” lifestyle. I’ve had countless conversations with photography friends who needed to diversify their income streams into teaching gigs and commercial projects to pay bills. In the beginning, it might be a tough road, but let me assure you that it is possible to carve a path to success with effort and dedication. As told before, learning the basics is what you need to start, and with a good mindset and determination, you’ll succeed in this career.

3. Creativity is not enough

Creativity and technical prowess are just the tip of the iceberg for a successful photographer. Networking, marketing, and business know-how are just as crucial in establishing your reputation and making waves as a professional in the industry. Sure, honing your creative skills is essential, but remember the equally important task of building connections and putting yourself out there. Networking with like-minded individuals, industry professionals, and potential clients can open doors to start on the field.

Nowadays, it is not enough to take stunning photos because you need to showcase your work and make it irresistible to potential clients. That means that you also need to focus on marketing strategies to showcase your brand. Another important thing that comes from the business side of things is understanding contracts and pricing. You must navigate the world of finances and legalities to protect your work and ensure your efforts are duly compensated.

4. Not all photographers are created equal

While education undoubtedly lays a solid foundation, there are other pathways to success. There are many ways to learn in these modern days. When I started photography, I learned the basics of composition, exposure triangle, and many other topics on Youtube. I also learned a lot from reading about different photographers’ experiences and many other friends who acted as mentors during my beginner years. Remember, education is not limited to a classroom. You can learn a lot from hands-on experiences and stories of personal growth. Don’t blame yourself if you don’t have a fancy degree in photography. Instead, focus on continuously learning your craft, seeking guidance from others, and embracing the lessons only experiences can teach. Combining knowledge, practice, and passion will ultimately determine your success as a professional photographer.

5. Photography can be emotionally draining

Remind yourself that criticism can be harsh, but it is an opportunity for growth. Learn from it and let it fuel your determination to become a better photographer. And when it comes to difficult clients, remember that effective communication and setting clear boundaries can work wonders. Photographers also face creative block and burnout, which will affect their work and their mental and emotional health. So I advise nurturing your mental and emotional well-being and never forgetting the passion that ignited your journey.

Photography is a never-ending skill to learn. I have enjoyed my photography journey throughout the years. However, I wish someone told me those hidden things when I started as a photographer.

Please share your thoughts with me in the comments below! Are you experiencing the same things on your journey?
