Today’s media world encourages readers and writers to connect.

We have gone beyond writing letters to the editor that may disappear into someone’s round file or eventually appear in print to our delight or horror, if we’ve had second thoughts about writing in a fit of pique.

Today, we read online, and we comment, making a connection with the author and other readers. This practice has become wildly popular whether the piece is in a major newspaper, a local rag, or an online blog.

Authors are more likely to respond to comments on their blogs, and sometimes they engage with readers in spirited conversations either online or privately in emails.

Many of us on the Medium blogging platform enjoy this aspect of our community. And it was in this way that I met Anne Janzer and came to appreciate her writing advice. In addition to reading her blog posts, I have purchased a couple of her books.

What is Kickstarter?

Recently, Anne reached out to me about supporting her in her latest adventure. She is introducing her latest self-published book via a Kickstarter campaign.

Self-publishing is tricky, and marketing is difficult. Kickstarter helps market creative products. The platform has a wide following of people and businesses seeking the next new thing.

As a member of Anne’s launch team, I received an advance copy of her book to read. I loved her idea for a field guide for reading nonfiction, and as I expected, she has written another winner.

The Curious Reader’s Field Guide to Nonfiction

Those of us who are curious about the world around us love reading nonfiction. We dabble through the 25 major genres and their subgenres according to our many interests, but are we satisfied that our reading choices are the best use of our limited time?

Janzer’s Field Guide seeks to alert us to quality writing so our reading will be more rewarding.

She clarifies different aspects of engaging writing and even offers a spiral-bound field guide to encourage you to pay attention to what and why you are reading.

With a light touch and a delicious sense of humor, this author points the way.

Much of this short book will be a review for committed readers of nonfiction, but I guarantee you will learn something new and be inspired to make some changes in your reading habits and even be motivated to level up your writing skills using your increased knowledge about the craft of writing.
