Walking in the Park is Different if you are a Writer
I went for a long walk in the neighborhood park with my partner.
I took it all in. Noticing every tiny detail, while he was lost in his own thoughts. I had words running in my head as I was walking with quick steps on the cobbled pathway.
I didn’t just walk like the rest. I was taking it all in. The sights, the sounds, the actions, the people. Every intricate detail.
Grey cotton-candy clouds
A stray dog with mucky black paws that looked like socks
The hard-of-hearing old man who blasted an old Hindi song on his phone
A teen who was shooting for an Instagram reel
I came, I saw, I thought….in words…
My mind was like a blank sheet of paper, filling up with each little detail in words. The colors, the actions, the changes. I was quick to notice it all.
Why was I different? Why was my mind wired like this? And then I knew it. It was because I was a writer.
Writers like us are wired differently. We notice things differently. Our mind is unlike the rest. Here is how we are different from the rest.
We have a vivid imagination. (Did that dog run into a gutter and get himself two sets of black socks?)
We observe everything with a keen eye. (A simple walk in the park was an opportunity to absorb the sights, sounds, and emotions )
We embrace emotions (Why is my soul feeling thick, heavy and dark like the rain clouds?)
We are curious (How many Instagram followers does that teen have?)
The writer’s mind is an intricate tapestry of imagination, observation, emotions, perseverance, and curiosity.
