Have you ever woken up with a song and can’t stop singing it all day?

The other day, I was feeling kind of down so I decided to turn inward for inspiration. In my stillness, the song “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves popped into my consciousness. I’m so grateful it did.

Not only is the music upbeat — the words speak to my heart.

Reflecting On the Song Title

Walking on Sunshine…

With those three words, I found the key to turning my mood around.

Here’s why they were so impactful.

Let’s start with the word walking.

I associate it with movement, toward a location. In the case of this song — toward a happy state of mind.

Now let’s take the word sunshine.

When I reflect on the word sunshine, it reminds me the sun is always shining — even on the stormiest of days when it’s hidden behind a thick layer of clouds.

Just like the qualities of joy, love, and fulfillment are always present inside us, even on those days when we’re feeling down in the dumps.

Thus, walking on sunshine is the ability to become aware of the positive energy that is always present within us.

Once I have that awareness, I am uplifted. My mindset has changed from dreary to cheery. I am then set to carry that positive state of mind into my daily life. Not only that — I can pay my positivity forward to help cheer up others.

Three Tips to Help You Walk On Sunshine

  1. Have an attitude of gratitude.

Find at least three things you’re grateful for every day. Feeling grateful will keep your heart open. Even in those challenging situations that inevitably come up from time to time — there is always a lesson or blessing you can take away from it.

2. Connect with Your higher power, whatever that may be.

Connecting with your higher power on a daily basis is a sure way to feel the love, joy, and fulfillment inside of you. I connect to my higher power through walks in nature, reading, listening to music, and practicing spiritual exercises.

Ask yourself: How can I connect with my higher power today?

3. Create an Exercise routine that works for you.

Exercise can be fun. Do you like to dance? Do you enjoy walking, taking a run, or perhaps doing yoga?
Exercise is anything that keeps your body moving. When I take a class at the gym with my ladies, I feel terrific. We laugh at ourselves and have plain old fun.

Ask yourself: What exercises can I do today that I’ll enjoy?

Walking on Sunshine” is a choice. You can experience that joyful feeling any time you want.

You only need to make the decision and then practice. The more you practice, the easier it will become to make that choice.

It doesn’t matter how you get there — whether it’s by reflecting on an inspiring song, following any of my three tips, or coming up with your own approach.

Never forget — you deserve a joyful life and you can find a path to get there.
