I’m not asking you to become SpongeBob SquarePants nor am I asking you to walk around wearing a SpongeBob T-shirt. Here’s what I mean by becoming a sponge in order to become a better writer:

Imagine a sponge. Now imagine that sponge in action. Try to pay close attention to how it functions. You may have noticed, a sponge has an effective characteristic.

It can absorb!

This is a very important and effective characteristic. Being a sponge, essentially, allows you to absorb content surrounding you. If you want to become a better writer, you need to become a sponge.

Absorb different types of writing, absorb different kinds of content, absorb anything that is remotely creative, absorb, absorb, absorb!

However, function of a sponge does not stop there. A sponge also has the capacity to produce everything it has absorbed. When you squeeze a sponge, all the water it has absorbed comes pouring out.

This is what is required of you if you want to become a better writer. After absorbing you must begin to squeeze your creative juices and produce. You must generate output for everything you are absorbing.

Through production, you will understand what works, what does not work, and how you can improve your writing to develop into a better writer.

So that’s what I have for you today: become a sponge to become a better writer!
