How to get published: Agent, Publisher and Editor Panel Q & A

Last night, I attended the above event run by the York Literature Festival. It was free — all you had to do was pre-book your tickets.

Independent publishers, literary agents, a science fiction author, and a poetry magazine editor were all on the panel.

I made a few notes and thought I’d share them below.

[One website mentioned was The Association of Authors’ Agents if you need advice or help finding a literary agent in the UK.

A magazine called The Bookseller was also mentioned. This deals with the trade and business of selling books.]

What are they looking for in a submission?

Both agents and publishers were looking for submissions that were the following:

  • Confident
  • Professional
  • Unique
  • Pieces they were excited to read
  • Poetry that evokes emotion and moves you
