According to the National Association of School Psychologists, emotional self-care is “a process whereby individuals can identify, understand, and manage their emotions.” In other words, it’s a way to take care of your mental and emotional health.

Think of it this way: just as you need to take care of your physical health by eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep, you also need to take care of your emotional health. Emotional self-care is about being proactive in managing your emotions so that they don’t become overwhelming.

It’s also about building resilience — the ability to recover from or adjust easily to difficult situations. When you have strong emotional self-care skills, you’re better able to cope with stress, adversity, and challenges.

Protect Your Energy

One of the most important things you can do for yourself when it comes to emotional self-care is protecting your energy. How do you feel when you’re around certain people? How do you feel when you are away from these people?
