When You’re Good at Writing One Thing But You Want to Write Something Else
Can you honestly do both and do them both well?
It’s really crazy how sometimes we get known for something we never planned, whether it’s a good or bad thing, it’s just something that happens. That’s what happened with me.
I ended up becoming most recognized for writing about writing — tips, encouragement, observations, and lessons learned from my time publishing online.
But what I really wanted to do was write short stories. Fiction. Creative stuff, like I just finally resumed doing only recently, and it hasn’t been easy.
I tried doing this several times before, yet — the more I tried to pivot away from my usual content, the more I realized how recognizable my voice and brand had become, around the theme of offering writing advice.
It wasn’t planned, but it happened. And that made me stop and think.
What if you’re really good at one kind of writing, but your passion lies somewhere else? Should you do both?
In fact, can a writer truly do both, and do them both justice? (no pun intended — honest 😄).
Truthfully: That’s a question that every writer must answer for themselves.
