How we prepared our final deliverable!

In order to create this interactive tool to look into the issues and resources related to food insecurity, we conducted background research. We looked into academic Papers on Food Security, Relation to Women, COVID, and issues related to food within major cities in the U.S.

Once we conducted our overview of food insecurity in the United States, we wanted to choose two major metropolitan cities to compare their individual struggles with food insecurity and the ways they are committed to combatting these issues. We eventually choose NYC and Atlanta as two diverse cities to compare analyses.

We then looked into demographics and vulnerabilities in Atlanta and NYC. This research posed to help understand institutional issues each city has in terms of neighborhood minority communities, who were most at risk, and why food insecurity, deserts, or swamps persist in these communities to this day. We also analyzed mapping overlays of racial demographics and available grocery stores to take a deeper dive into food deserts in each city.

We reached out to many farms and urban agriculture/food security nonprofits for comment on these issues specific to their city. Unfortunately, many organizations did not respond back after months of waiting. Those who did respond, we set up an interview to get their professional opinion at the issues at hand. Continuous research was conducted to search for other resources for food security in both cities.

Throughout the semester, we worked on creating this interactive website as an accessible resource for the public. We hope people who live in New York City or Atlanta can utilize the helpful resources we have linked to help secure nutritious foods in the area.

Example: Farmer’s Market Fruits and Vegetables
