Adjusting to Doing Things Differently in a New Job

Here at New York Technology Partners, our recruiters have learned a thing or two about what it’s like for job seekers to switch from working at one company to somewhere else — having helped place a multitude of job seekers in new positions. Below, you’ll find some sage advice from some of NYTP’s staffing experts on how you can learn to best adapt and adjust to a new and potentially unfamiliar working environment.

Allow yourself to be vulnerable. We all have egos, and it may not be easy to comprehend that our learned way of doing things might not always be the best way of doing things. By being vulnerable, and having your perceived “best way” dug into, you can encounter an eye-opening experience that can change your perspective. This, in turn, will allow you to be more mentally flexible to learning/doing things differently.

Enter each new opportunity with an open mind, as companies do things differently for different reasons and it is best to enter into a new role with that understanding. Allow the process to sink in for a little while before you have a decent grasp of why things are being done the way they are. It’s also good to ask questions, as a more solid understanding of why things are being done within your organization will aid your understanding of what the company’s goals and expectations are.

Learn what is expected of you and what institutional policies/standards exist within your organization. For example, whether or not your company prefers to use one email client (such as Gmail) over another (such as Outlook). As in many cases, a learning curve is to be expected when you are becoming accustomed to the standards of something new or different.

Quickly learn at least three unique things about each person on your team.

Turn off the pessimistic self-talk. Don’t overthink or over-strategize what to do, what to say, what to wear, and so on.

Be yourself and be authentic to build trust among your company’s management staff and colleagues.

While switching to a new employer can be a potentially stressful and confusing experience, staying engaged and having an open mind regarding your new environment as you learn the ropes.
