Dear Readers,

It’s always gratifying to see progress being made on core issues that affect New Yorkers, and this month, we were pleased to be a part of an effort to achieve a harassment free New York. For 27 years, New York failed to hold public hearings on sexual harassment and now there will be a second hearing that will take place on May 24th following our first one earlier in February. (You can follow ongoing developments on Twitter under the hashtag #HarassmentFreeNY and in our Twitter feed @ny4justice.)

This is an important step on the long road to creating lasting and meaningful reform, and is due largely to the tireless efforts of the Sexual Harassment Working Group (@harassment_free). As SHWG’s co-founder, Erica Vladimer and I wrote in an op-ed in December, “Instead of limiting information and continuing to silence victims, we need transparency and well-informed policy.” Public hearings are critical to ensure that the voices of survivors, advocates, and experts are heard, and that our state’s sexual harassment laws are designed to fully protect workers.

I cannot overstate my admiration for the brave survivors who, having experienced harassment themselves, have chosen to advocate for others. Their voices are crucial if we’re going to develop policy that offers real accountability for employers and addresses fundamental changes that need to happen to guarantee that everyone can have a harassment-free working environment. I was proud to work with them on this important issue and will continue to advocate on behalf of survivors.

Please join us as we work to move the issue forward.
