This week I read an article about the most expensive places in the world to buy a house, stating that Auckland ranks the fourth place. It made me wonder about the cost of living in New Zealand. As soon as I started researching about this theme, I realized that the name Auckland was always coming up. Firstly, I found many articles about the housing prices there. According to the data site Numbeo, Auckland is among the most expensive cities in the world. It ranks the 19th place with the average cost per month of $3,201. In order to give you some context, the first place was Hamilton in Bermuda, with the estimated monthly cost of $6,851. Also, in this data site, one can easily find information about the living costs in various other countries. In comparison with Germany, for instance, the cost of living in New Zealand is 27,25% higher and the cost of rent is 36,47% higher. Another data that surprised me was the comparison between renting prices in Frankfurt am Main and in Auckland. Although Frankfurt is considered one of the most expensive cities to live in Germany, rent in Auckland is 36.51% higher than it is in Frankfurt. While the average monthly price for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center in Frankfurt is 857.33€, in Auckland the price for an apartment with the same conditions is 1,161.16€. However, the difference is lower if we compare the cost of living in Frankfurt and Wellington. In Wellington rent prices are only 5.38% higher than in Frankfurt. In this website one can also compare the Quality of Life indexes of numerous cities. In Frankfurt, for instance, the Quality of Life index is considered very high, with a result of 169.82. In Auckland, though, the result is even better with an index of 174.72. Both cities score high in most of their indexes. Nonetheless, Auckland has better Climax and Traffic Commute Time indexes. However, the most interesting comparison was the one between the Quality of Life indexes in Wellington and in Auckland. In Wellington the number rises to 212.46. The capital also has better results in the indexes of Purchasing Power, Safety, Property Price to Income Ratio, Traffic Commute Time and Pollution.
