A lot of people, who have seen or heard something about New Zealand might have thought about going there. Words are not sufficient to describe the beautiful nature. New Zealanders are said to be one of the kindest people. And living there is described as peaceful and harmonious.

So what is the catch about New Zealand?

After the arrival it soon becomes very clear that prices in New Zealand are much higher compared to German prices. Except fast food-everything seems expensive and also supermarkets have higher prices if you’re not shopping at Pack n’ Save, which is the cheapest one.

To compare prices or to look for the next Pack n’ Save is also difficult because internet is expensive and Wi-Fi hotspots are pretty rare. Libraries can often be recognized by a lot of people standing around the entrance and holding smartphones in their hands because libraries offer free Wi-Fi. It is expected that a modern country like New Zealand is also modern in terms of internet but it isn’t. If you check in into a hostel you’ll get a coupon for an internet balance around 100mb — which is exactly nothing and afterwards you have to pay for further internet.

The only annoying thing about nature in New Zealand is the nerve-racking sandflies, which exist luckily only in the south-west of south island. That there are sometimes four different weather seasons a day might be annoying for some but otherwise New Zealand wouldn’t offer that beautiful landscapes.

Many people, who come back from a trip through NZ, report that driving around offers so many beautiful views. Yes! They are right BUT getting around in New Zealand is not easy without a car. Offside all larger cities public transportation is not very common. There are some tour busses and NZ has also a railway system but both are not frequent and do not really offer an alternative for hiring a car.

But why should NZ build a railway system to every smaller city? The 4.4 million inhabitants are also able to live their life without an unlimited internet connection. Isn’t it the freedom and the infinite width what makes NZ so attractive? If you’re in NZ you’re not only far away, you also feel far away. In our medial world it is just the thing people are looking for.
