Housing again… but from another point of view

Housing in New Zealand seems to be a never ending story. Whereas Auckland can’t accommodate the number of residence other places in New Zealand strive for more people.

Kaitangata has been on the news quite often lately. Never heard about it? Well, that’s for a good reason. Kaitangata is a small town somewhere located between Dunedin and Invercargill. Mean tongues would say, somewhere in the middle of nowhere. When you google Kaitangata you see photos of beautiful landscape, typical for New Zealand. Coastlines, a river, green fields… But what lacks are, well lets say, houses and residents.

And that is the point. Kaitangata is extremely short on residents and thereby on employees which are especially used for the local coal mining industry. Lately, the local Kaitangata Promotion organisation made headline because of an interessting offer. Come to Kaitangata and well will offer you a “Welcome Package” worth trifling amount of 230.000$NZ. This packages includes a house and the land it stands on which is compared to the national average price of 580000$ for the same a really good deal.

The town of Kaitangata offered 8 (!) of those packages and got an enomourous number of more than 5000 responses. Interestingly, not only New Zealanders applied for those houses but also many people from Syria, Iraqu or funnily many people from Great Britain who want to leave GB after their Breixit.

It seems that Kaitangata found a solution approach which could be transfered to other parts of New Zealand like Auckland. If there would be lucrative offers in Aucklands surrounding area some people would propably think about moving out of Auckland.
