No, the two don’t seem to be able to agree someday. Not only in the matter of national flags or Rugby, as well in the question of food the two countries behave like grumpy grimalkins.

And yet, Australia and New Zealand founded a common Government agency for Food Standards called FOOD Standards Australia New Zealand, which lists requirements for foods such as additives, food safety, labelling and GM foods. Wow, unexpected and not a bad idea at all!

Here is a collection of some nourishments which exist in both countries, some of which both claim to have invented:

Lamington — a small squadrish spongy cake. It exists in both countries, and Australians actually love them so much, they celebrate their own national Lamington Day on the 21st of July, since 2006. Nevertheless, some Kiwi scientists researching on that topic came up with a watercolor painting of 1888 which should actually prove that the cake was invented in Wellington. Seriously? Okay, first point in favour of New Zealand.

Pavlova — a fluffy crispy meringue topped with whipped cream and fruits. Both Aussies and Kiwis claim to have created this extraordinary dessert, which is known as national speciality in both countries and is named after a 1920s Russian ballerina. Also in this case, research has been done for over two years and it revealed that the cake factually appeared earlier in time (before the 1920s) in England and America. Awww, draw!

Marmite (NZ) or Vegemite (AUS) — a salty Umami-tasting brownish paste on a yeast base, most delicious on a slice of warm melted-butter-toast (try it!). Since I know the taste of the German Vitam-R from my childhood — popular amongst vegetarians, as it provides a lot of Vitamin B — one of the first things I bought in the grocery store in Australia was Vegemite. Although I found inconsistent stories about who had it earlier, Kiwis and Aussies don’t seem to mind too much. However, the paste truely fantastically adds flavour to sauces, soups or salads, in addition. Yum!

Sausage Rolls — an Aussie or Kiwi sausage wrapped in puff pastry, fried, or even deep fried: an awesomely pervaliscious snack if you’re dead hungry and have got nothing else at hand. There is no fight over who invented these, as settlers must have brought them over from the UK. PEACE BE WITH YOU!
