Now being legal in some parts of the US, I was wondering how drugs are dealt with in New Zealand.

Apart from cigarettes here is a list of drugs that can get you into jail:

PossessionSupply or manufactureAllowing your premises or vehicle to be used for a drugs offenceClass A

methamphetamine, magic mushrooms, cocaine, heroin, LSD6 months jailLife imprisonmentOn indictment: 10 years jail
Summarily: 2 years jail and/or $1,000 fineClass B

cannabis oil, hashish, morphine, opium, ecstasy and many amphetamines
3 months jail and/or $500 fine14 years jailOn indictment: 7 years jail
Summarily: 1 year jail and/or $1,000 fineClass C

cannabis seed, cannabis plant, codeine
3 months jail and/or $500 fineOn indictment: 8 years jail
Summarily: 1 year jail and/or $1,000 fineOn indictment: 3 years jail
Summarily: 6 months jail and/or $500 fine

The New Zealand Herald reported that New Zealand has the ninth highest use of illegal substances in the world. More than 30% of the youth (14–17) are declaring that they are using drugs on a weekly basis.

For me it is quite shocking to hear that. Knowing the size of New Zealand I think it is alarming to see them on 9th place compared to the world.

What do you think: Is it better to legalise drugs like cannabis ?
