New Zealand’s Cuisine

In this blogpost I would like to take a look at a really interesting topic, at least in my opinion — Food. New Zealand’s cuisine so to speak. Why hadn’t I thought of it before?

In New Zealand there is guaranteed something for everyone: for lovers of fish and seafood (unfortunately I don’t count myself as one of them), gourmets who favor wine and cheese (yup, that’s rather my thing than seafood, even though I’m not a gourmet :-D) , barbecue fans (hell yeah!) und last but not least also for the ones who are having a sweet tooth among us.

New Zealand is really famous for its seafood and fish, such as mussels and stuff. And I know, most of the people really like this kind of food, but I can’t even stand the smell of it. I don’t like anything that comes from the sea — no, not even fish and chips (if possible, I’d only take the chips).

Barbecues are a main part of the summer in NZ. But, rather than the once traditional sausage and chop with tomato sauce and white bread, today’s ‘barbie’ menu is more likely to include shellfish and quality cuts of meat complemented with gourmet sauces, herbs and spices, exotic salads and specialist vegetables and fruits. A good glass of wine is what rounds it all off.

Let’s get to my favorite part: desserts and sweets. The most famous dessert in New Zealand is probably Pavlova. It’s a type of merengue covered in whipped cream, topped with fresh fruit such as strawberries and kiwifruit. Sounds really delicious, doesn’t it?

When it comes to sweets, Kiwis call them „Lollies“, they prefer things such as Minties (chewy, mint-flavored sweets), Pineapple Lumps (chocolate coated confectionery with a soft, pineapple-flavored middle) and Jaffas (small, round sweets with a soft chocolate centre and a thin hard covering with an orange flavor).

Sooo, I think when it comes to food New Zealand really offers something for anyone.

P.S. I hope this blogpost didn’t make you too hungry ;)
