They say it is 100% Pure! But is it true?

What does this say? 100% Pure New Zealand? They can’t be for real, there must be joking but no….they are dead serious. But what do I really mean with 100% Pure New Zealand? Well it is not coming from me. The national tourism agency of New Zealand came up with this advertisement. They are using it to promote tourism in the country, because it is one of the main incomes.

But let us think about that for one second, 100 % Pure New Zealand? What does that mean? That everything about this country is New Zealandish? That everything is Maori? That there are no influences of other nations or that everything is pollution free? Well if you sort of thought about the last one, than you might be right. They want to attract tourist, because they or the slogan says that everything is pure and free from dirt. But if look into how high the pollution is in this country, than this slogan is really misleading. For example, the whole country’s grass house gases are 60% higher per person than in the whole UK and also 22% higher than in 1990. Think about that: the population of New Zealand are 4 mio. People. Alone in London there is living 6 mio. People. Just London, without the population of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland but still New Zeeland’s grass house gases are 60 % higher per person, this is just outrages.

The well known Waikato River, well you can’t or shouldn’t swim in it. This river is completely polluted with chemicals, so you can look at it but don’t touch it, I would recommend it. And the recycling programmes are also pretty minimal. Well I guess this pretty sums up why there are still people complaining about the slogan. Do you know John Key? He is the Prime minister of New Zealand and also the tourism minister (how surprising). He did an interview with BBC and you might guess three times but I bet you will know it right from the beginning. He defended the whole campaign. The interviewer confronted him with critisms by Dr. Mike Joy from the Massey University that they are all delusional about how green and clean they are.

He even has proof that New Zealand has some pollution problems but still Mr. Key defends the slogan. Making comparisons with McDonalds, yeah, you just heard right, he compares this slogan with McDonalds. I am not making this stuff up. He said that this is like the slogan ‘’I am loving’ it’’ from McDonalds (I repeat the name ‘’McDonalds’’, because no one really can be this stupid to make this up), it is an exaggeration and that a lot of companies do those things to sell their product. Well McDonalds is trying to sell food, where everybody knows it is not healthy but this guy is trying to, well sort of not literally, sell his country or to attract people.

Even a lot of species are going extinct because of pollution that is how bad it is there. I mean he says 100%, it is not 99 or 50 or hell even 1% pure, which would be more accurate, no this slogan says 100%. Even compared to the rest of the world, how John Key says, not even close 100%. I mean rest of the world? Like I said 4 Mio. In New Zealand are polluting more than the whole UK. NZ is a pretty small country when it comes to population but how on earth can so few people makes so much dirt? It is not like in China or India where there a living over a Billion people, of course there is much more pollution but how on earth can you make such and comparison? You can’t. 100% in comparison to the rest of the world, like Mr. Key said, well maybe this should have been the slogan? Come to NZ we are 100% pure in comparison to the rest of the world, but even that would have been a lie and I totally understand why so many people in NZ are angry at this advertisement, of course you can exaggerated a little bit but not that much, and specially when it comes to the environment, it is not something you should joke about when you talk about advertise tourism.

One of NZ main incomes and the national tourism just lies, like they don’t want it to be real that they have a problem, they lie to themselves. I don’t know how you all think about this but this sums up why, not only in NZ but in the whole world the system is broken. For money they do everything no matter the cost and if this financial source is gone, well we find surely a new one, like always until there is nothing left.
