The Importance of Mental Health

What exactly is mental health?
Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being all contribute to our mental health. It has an impact on how we think, feel, and act. It also influences how we deal with stress, interact with others, and make healthy choices. 1 Mental health is essential throughout life, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood.

While the terms are frequently used interchangeably, poor mental health and mental illness are not synonymous. A person can have poor mental health without being diagnosed with a mental illness. Similarly, a person with a mental illness can have periods of physical, mental, and social well-being.

In my opinion, mental health is important for overall health because for example, depression raises the risk of a variety of physical health issues, particularly long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the likelihood of developing mental illness.

It’s unfortunate that many teenagers and adults do not receive proper treatment for mental issues such as depression, anxiety, BPD, and many others because their parents or older generation do not believe in such a thing, believing that it’s just overthinking or us being “too much” for them, which leads to people committing suicide as a result of this ignorant behavior or failure to take these issues seriously.

I have dysthymic disorder, also known as persistent depressive disorder (PDD), and I’ve been on medication for a year. I’m here to encourage people to care for their own mental health. Why? Because, at the end of the day, the only person on whom you can rely is yourself. I once heard a movie quote that said, “Not choosing is still a choice,” so in my opinion, if you don’t choose to try and seek help, you have no one to blame but yourself.

I understand that some people may think my viewpoint is harsh, but only you can heal your own mental health because only you can heal completely. Some people believe that having someone or relying on someone else makes them happy, but we can’t always rely on others because nothing lasts forever.

There are many ways to solve this problem, and it is not embarrassing or crazy to go to a psychiatrist or seek therapists. Many people are afraid of taking medication or seeing a psychiatrist because they don’t want to be labeled as mentally ill or insane, and I’m here to tell you that having mental issues is completely normal. Many factors contribute to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, but no one chooses to be depressed or sad; I believe that people would prefer to be happy all of the time if they could.

We can control ourselves, but we cannot control others. Many people suffer from depression as a result of childhood trauma, a poor living environment, or people who harm them verbally or physically. To be honest, this is why we need to take care of ourselves: we can’t control what other people do or say to us, but we can control and save ourselves from it. It’s easy to say, but I believe that if you try hard enough, you can heal.

There are numerous avenues for seeking assistance, and I believe that many people now care about this issue; our generation is more open-minded, and many of us suffer from depression or anxiety. So, if you need assistance, please speak up or reach out to a friend or professional; do not ignore it because it will worsen. Not everyone will understand or relate, but if your friends are unable to assist you, you should be able to assist yourself. If you require assistance, there are numerous free consultations and therapies available online. Set and achieve a goal in your life, and try to surround yourself with more optimistic people because it will affect your perception of the world.
