University/college is a place for students to continue their studies after graduating from high school or anyone who wants to master a degree. It is a high-level education institution with high education professors that teach a variety of subjects. Students who don’t go to university or college may end up jobless, establish their small businesses, or work as a part-timer. One of the reasons why students don’t go to university/college is because of their financial issues, and I believe that university/college should be free.

Firstly, I think that the tuition fee for enrolling in some universities/colleges are too expensive, especially private schools. Tuition fees in the 80s-90s were cheaper than now. In 1988, the average tuition for a private 4-year institution was around $15,000. For the 2017–2018 school year, the average tuition has risen to $34,000 which is a 129 percent increase. The tuition fee affects the enrollment rates. Therefore, enrollment rates will be higher if the tuition fee is lower. Another reason to point out in this topic is that students are required to fulfill a number of credit points in order to graduate, however, they had to pay more fees to enquire in the subject.

Secondly, university/college should be free because it can encourage more students to attend and increase access to job opportunities. After all, most big companies only hire workers who have a degree from university/college. Students can also improve their personal growth and self-esteem. By attending university/college, students can explore a variety of classes, hobbies, friends, careers, and more. In other words, they can discover which job options are suitable for them in the future. Usually, the institution offers an internship program related to the job target and it is very beneficial for students to try and learn new experiences. Meanwhile, if they don’t receive this kind of learning opportunity, it is less likely for them to have a stable job.

Lastly, high-education people can solve better problems and improves society. Hopefully, they can contribute their skills to the country. There are a few countries that offer free or low-cost universities and colleges, such as German, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and more. Let’s take German as an example, it is said that “Germans believe that education should not be treated as a commercial product” and “Germany’s governments of recent years have understood the economic and social benefits of immigration. Germany wants to get the smartest minds to study in the country, and ideally to stay and work after graduation. That is why there are no general tuition fees for foreigners, as well.” I think that other universities/colleges should have this kind of mindset too so it can also increase the number of employable people for the high-skilled job.

In conclusion, university/college should consider giving free education to students or anyone who want to continue higher education. In view of the fact that free education can encourage people to attend university/college and give a chance for low-income students to pursue their dream, I hope in the future the ministry of education in any other country can lower the tuition fee or give free education to everyone.
