Why did the Unicorn want to join the Military? … She wanted to wear a U-Ni-Form!

Dawn Turner — Digital Designer

When you’re stepping out into the unknown world of creating sparkly new online services, one needs to wear a uniform.

That’s what the Newham Digital Team have been doing. We want to tell you something… we think the jokes probably need a bit of work, but so do digital services…. and it’s still a mystery to us as to what exactly the solution will actually be.

So….. that’s where you come into the picture.

Newham Digital had a stall in the Community Neighbourhoods tent

Recently we have been having fun (probably as much as the people we met in these pictures) at the Newham Show. We did our best to speak to the 50,000 locals (not quite! But we spoke to almost 100) at the 2-day event which attracts a wide cross section of Newham residents.

The Team’s mission for the weekend was to talk to as many citizens of Newham as possible to widen our data base of people to talk to so that we are quickly able to test any digital ideas we have with citizens over the coming months.

We asked people who had their photo taken to fill out a survey. We asked targeted questions so that we could understand the diversity of the people who use Newham Digital council services. This will mean we will design products that will work for them and be able to test the products with them to ensure they satisfy their needs. We asked questions about where people live in the borough, their digital literacy and availability so we can catch up with them for a chin wag soon. We thought it was great to know that so many people are comfortable surfing the web and interesting to find out that 88% of those people like to do it on a mobile. Here are the results;

We want to live up to our motto of Shaping The Future of Digital so we asked kids what they thought about how future digital services could look like. We prepared this interactive game. Here are the results.

As well as spreading our rainbows and glitter at the Newham Show. We also have been testing some of the products we have been designing over the past few months including the prototype for Homelessness Prevention Centre. Here is a picture with headline comments;

It’s important we get this right for everyone who will use the service. If you want to get involved and help us design services that meet your needs, we want to hear from you. Please fill out this short survey, which includes leaving your name and contact details and we will get back to you to schedule a time to meet you.
