Summer in Spanish Harlem
A collaborative project by & Martika-Ornella Wilson
An upper Manhattan bastion of Latin culture and artistic expression, Spanish Harlem came to be following decades of Caribbean migration to the neighborhood beginning in the early twentieth century.
“People are very much about this neighborhood.” — East Harlem newcomer Kaitlin Tyrell
Spanish Harlem, colloquially known as El Barrio, historically marks the predominately Hispanic, primarily Puerto Rican, bounded community of East Harlem — a community some residents fear will disappear as the neighborhood gentrifies.
Here, two residents — Angel Quiles and Kaitlin Tyrell, explain why they love el barrio.
New Harlem World covers stories related, but not limited to displacement, gentrification, and social unrest in Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx. You can follow Martika Ornella on Twitter @martikaornella, or email her at martika.wilson@journalism.cuny.edu.
