19 Officers to Graduate from NNPD Academy Friday

Newport News Police Department will celebrate its 31st graduating class of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy as 19 recruits become officers this Friday morning. The graduation ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church Newport News, 12716 Warwick Blvd.

Graduates will hear remarks from Michael Coker from the Department of Criminal Justice, Academy Director Lt. Michael Sinclair, Chief of Police Steve Drew, Young Adult Police Commissioner Malaysia Ishmael and BLE 31 class representative Tiffany Williams. The ceremony will also include Newport News Police Department’s Color Guard and Newport News Police Pipes and Drums Band. The Honorable Matthew Hoffman, Newport News Circuit Courts judge, will swear in the officers.

This ceremony culminates six months of rigorous training, both in the classroom and in practical scenarios. Graduating officers will be assigned to field training officers for additional training before being released to independent patrol at one of the department’s three precincts.
