Update: Victim Identified in Auto-Pedestrian Accident

(12/30/2019, 9:35 a.m.) The victim has been identified as 56-year-old Joseph Robert Upchurch, of the 900 block of 17th Street. No charges have been filed in connection with this incident. The investigation remains ongoing.

Original Release:

On December 24, 2019, approximately 5:42 p.m., Newport News police were dispatched to an auto-pedestrian crash near the intersection of Wickham Avenue and 18th Street.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with an adult male who was lying in the road deceased. Another adult male — a 60-year-old Newport News resident — was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the first male was lying in the roadway due to unknown circumstances when the 60-year-old Newport News man stopped to render aid. A driver of an SUV was unaware of the individuals in the roadway and struck them both.

There is no further information to release at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
