Last week, the Newport News Police Department took into custody a 44-year-old Newport News man in connection with the robbery of TowneBank and Bayport Credit Union and attempted robbery of First Virginia in November and December.

Michael Brian Alligood is facing multiple charges in the following investigations:

On November 3, 2021, at approximately 11:03 a.m., police responded to a robbery at TowneBank in the 11000 block of Warwick Boulevard. A man walked into the bank and gave a note to the teller demanding money. He took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot.

In that case, Alligood is charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit a felony: robbery, entering a bank to commit larceny, and possession of explosives by a convicted felon.

On November 6, 2021, at approximately 1:44 p.m., officers responded to a panic alarm activation at First Virginia in the 600 block of J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. A man walked into the business, approached an employee and gave her a note with a written bomb threat. The man fled the building without any money.

In that attempted robbery, Alligood is charged with attempt to commit felony robbery, and possession of explosives by a convicted felon.

On December, 28, 2021, at approximately 1:30 p.m., police responded to a robbery at Bayport Credit Union in the 8000 block of Marshall Avenue. A preliminary investigation revealed that an adult male entered the business, handed a note to a teller, and took an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency. He then fled the building on foot.

Alligood is charged with one count of robbery in that incident.

“It is because of our community’s willingness to step forward that we were able to apprehend this suspect,” Chief of Police Steve Drew said.

“The department is experiencing clearance rates higher than the national average in all areas, including violent crime. We thank not only our community but our amazing investigative team for making this possible.”
