Update: Homicide Investigation — 33rd Street

Update (Sept. 14, 2023, 2:20 p.m.)

After a thorough investigation and search, the Newport News Police Department, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, apprehended Ronald Lashawne Brown on Thursday, Sept. 14, in Hopewell, Virginia. Mr. Brown was wanted on charges of first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of firearm in commission of a felony in relation to the homicide of Tahesha Saunders on Aug. 3 on 33rd Street.

Mr. Brown is being transported back to Newport News for booking. An updated booking photo will be provided once available.

Update (Aug. 4, 2023, 10:30 a.m.)

The victim in this incident has been identified as Tahesha Saunders, 35, of Newport News. The investigation is ongoing.

On Thursday, August 3, 2023, at approximately 8:42 a.m., Newport News Police Department responded to the 1100 block of 33rd Street in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female outside a residence suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident appears to be domestic in nature.

Detectives are on scene and forensics is processing the area. The investigation is ongoing.
