
NNPD Seeks to Fill Newly Created Domestic Violence Specialist Position
The position of Domestic Violence Specialist for the Newport News Police Department (NNPD) was posted on the City’s website on Friday, November 1, 2019 and the Department is actively seeking qualified candidates to fill this position. This was a priority for Chief Steve Drew for 2019.
The Chief wants to seek a proactive approach to address domestic violence. And, best practices have shown that bringing expertise in-house can assist with awareness, prevention and intervention.
Our Domestic Violence Specialist will work with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, NNPD detectives as well as outside agencies i.e., Transitions Family Violence Services. They will also assist the Department with in-service training and will be heavily involved in NNPD community outreach efforts.
“I have been very outspoken about my commitment to addressing domestic violence in the City of Newport News and am grateful that we are able to move forward with hiring a person to work directly with our community, to offer this critical service in a proactive versus reactive fashion,” added Drew.
