NNPD SWAT Team Arrests Shooting Suspect; 8 Felony Warrants Served

Newport News Police Department executed a tactical operation in the early morning of July 27, 2023, resulting in the arrest of a 25-year-old Newport News man.

Jafay Jabarre Moore, of the 600 block of Aqua Vista Drive, was arrested on 11 warrants (8 felonies), including several firearms charges, related to a shooting that wounded a 19-year-old woman.

On March 21, 2023, officers responded to the 800 block of Roam Court in reference to gunshots heard. There, officers located three homes damaged by gunfire. While searching for evidence, officers were notified of a shooting victim — a 19-year-old Newport News woman — who had arrived at a local hospital. After further investigation, warrants were obtained charging Mr. Moore with:

· Shooting with the intent to maim

· Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

· Use of a firearm in commission of a felony

· Reckless handling of a firearm

· Willfully discharging a firearm in a public place

· Shooting into an occupied dwelling (x3)

In addition, Mr. Moore was served three warrants related to a domestic assault on April 13, 2023. He is charged with:

· Assault

· Assault on a family member

· Bomb/burn threat

Chief of Police Steve Drew praised members of the SWAT team, negotiators, detectives and officers who worked together to take Mr. Moore into custody, without incident.

“I want to emphasize that we will not tolerate violent crime in this city and will continue to deploy the resources necessary to find and hold those that commit these crimes accountable,” Chief Drew said. “We will continue to work with our community members to create a safer community for us all.”
