Shooting/Homicide Investigation 3400 block of Wickham Avenue

Update: (9/7/2021 9:36 a.m.) In reference to last night’s shooting/homicide, the deceased was identified as a 17-year-old Newport News male. The other shooting victim was identified as a 20-year-old Hampton man.

Due to the quick response from officers, 18-year-old Diontae Flythe, of the 3400 block of Roanoke Avenue, was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Murder, Aggravated Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony x 2, and Discharging a Firearm in Occupied Dwelling. On September 6, 2021, at 6:20 p.m., Newport News Communications received a call of a shooting in the 3400 block of Wickham Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile suffering from gunshot wounds inside a residence, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, an adult male was located in the 800 block of 35th Street suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are believed to be life-threatening.

An individual has been detained and is being questioned in reference to this incident. Evidence was located and recovered. Detectives are canvassing the area and the Forensics Unit is processing the scene.
